Pheobe Conger Allen's patriot  grandfather, Joseph Conger (1758 -1842),  found in New York!

Buel and Joe's Genealogy Junket (October 10th to 15th, 2002)

Subject: trip to New York state and Washington, DC

On Thursday October 10th, Dad and I traveled to New York, southern
Oneida County, to the berg of Sangerfield to see the Stockwell cemetery.
I discovered the burial site of our patriot ancestor Joseph Conger (1758
to 1842) by searching the internet in August. Dad located the actual
gravestone in the cemetery. There it lies on a hill, off Fogg Park Road,
south of town. It is well preserved, well cared for and with a lovely
serene view of the surrounding hills. (Picture enclosed) Gosh, New York
is pretty in the fall. Dad and I were ecstatic.

Friday, we traveled to Maryland to see cousin Richard Russell Conger and
family. We exchanged photos, took photos and conversed the whole night.
All eyes light up when dad and I rolled out a five-foot scroll of the
Conger family tree. The tree consisted of names and pictures of all the
descendants of all the family members since Austin Conger. Dad showed
the turn of the century photo of baby Richard Oscar and a year old
Charlie in Austin and Lula's lap.

Our success continued the Saturday, when dad and I traveled to downtown
Washington DC to visit the DAR (Daughter's of the American Revolution)
library and museum. Dad's AARP card didn't work, but I got in free,
since I was a member of the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution,
accepted in June 28, 2002) (Dad's membership application is in
progress). We were on a mission. It was to find the pension record of
the patriot ancestor. The record revealed that he received a $28 per
annum for his efforts in resisting the British in the Revolutionary War.
What a find, what a treasure. (Enclosed is copy of the pension abstract
from the National Archive records).

Tuesday October 15th, dad and I returned to Michigan. An early start
placed us thru the Detroit rush hour traffic and was home to Port Huron
by 4:30PM.

Charles Dickens starts his book Tale of Two Cities "It was the best of
times, it was the worst of times." It was the same for "tale of two
families". It was the best of times that Buel's health remained good and
was able to travel and drive and that our cousins accepted us showing
gracious warmth. It was the worst of times, if you consider what has
happened in Washington DC in September 11, 2001 and a sniper running
loose around our nation's capital, during October. Dad and I were not
fearful, but ecstatic that we accomplished what we had set out to do. We
had made connections with our shared families and to past generations.

I want to say, when you prepare your DAR applications feel free to call
me for assistance. The DAR application is a little more difficult than
the SAR. I met the DAR member who will be signing my sister's
application. She was very thorough. She wanted proof for everything. She
wanted certificates of birth for each spouse and marriage certificates
for each generation as well. Then each generation must be labeled in a
certain manner, then each generation in a separate generation file
folder. It is not impossible, but just more exacting. We have more than
enough proof.

The Conger trip to Washington DC was a trip into generations.

Sincerely:

Joseph Conger

APRIL 2002

I've spent some of the past winter in Lansing at the Library of Michigan
In the genealogy section they have a family history of not
only the Conger Family of  America but the Eggleston's of Michigan.

Pheobe Conger is named after her grandmother Pheobe Eggleston who is
married to our Patriot Ancester Joseph Conger. I've received proof of
this from the DAR. (Daughters of the American  Revolution). I will offer
these proofs to any one who would like them. Perhaps you would like to
add this to your web site.  Give them my e-mail address.

Searching the name Eggleston  was quite distinctive.  Pheobe Eggleston
was the daughter of Samuel Eggleston.  There are two listed Samuel
Eggleston's in the DAR.  My thought was that we may have patriot
ancestors on both side of the family.  It was not to be.  They not the
same Samuel Eggleston. Interestingly enough  Eggleston side is easily
searched on the LSD Family Search.com as well as the genealogy in the
Lib of Mich. The Eggleston's go back to 15th century England. I believe
my proofs are well documented.

Enclosed is a  text file of Pheobe Congers ancestors.  Please review.
Check out the LSD site and follow it back closely.  If you would like
Ione Eggleston's genealogy I'll send you a copy.  This is exciting news.

Sincerely

Joe Conger
